Charlotte, 31 Weeks

Miracle mum Laura shares Charlotte's story:

I began to develop symptoms of preeclampsia in week 29 of my pregnancy and was admitted as an inpatient to hospital. By week 31 I was becoming severely ill, and ultrasounds were showing that Charlotte was severely growth restricted. The decision was made at 31 weeks, 5 days to perform an emergency c-section. When she was born, Charlotte needed help to breathe and was taken to NICU and put on CPAP. During the c-section, I went into respiratory failure and my heart was put under strain by the build up of fluids caused by the preeclampsia. I was taken to ICU and put on oxygen and a magnesium drip to prevent seizures. It would be 24 hours before I was wheeled down to the NICU in my hospital bed, with the oxygen tank strapped to the side. The first time I held my baby, I was so weak, I could only hold her for 5 minutes. I spent a further two weeks in the hospital recovering and Charlotte spent almost two months in HDU then SCN. She made incredible progress and came home at just under 38 weeks. She spent her first two weeks at home being tube fed before eventually learning to feed without it. She is now a happy thriving little girl at almost six months old! We call her tiny but mighty!
