The early days of a premature or sick infant’s life are critical for setting the foundation for future growth and development. Regular monitoring and timely interventions are important to help children thrive. With the support of Paediatric allied health specialists, such as Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy, babies with the support of their caregivers can overcome many challenges and lead healthy, active lives.
Occupational therapists focus on developing and maximising a child’s independence, engagement and participation in all tasks and activities of a child’s life, which includes play, fine and gross motor skills and self-help tasks.
A physiotherapist focuses on the development of muscle strength, coordination, balance, posture, mobility and range of movement to maximise a child’s participation in a range of gross motor skills such as walking, running, kicking a ball or riding a bike and achievement of motor milestones.
A speech therapist or Speech and Language Pathologist can assist with a variety of speech, language and literacy difficulties. They work to help children communicate more effectively, build social skills and can support children to access augmentative and alternative forms of communication (AAC). They can also access and provide support with specific feeding or swallowing problems.
Early and ongoing monitoring is important for identifying and addressing any challenges early, helping these vulnerable infants have the best possible start in life.
