TUESDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2022
November NICU Awareness Month is a time to highlight the importance of Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Special Care Nurseries, and their amazing staff around Australia. Thank you for offering vital, specialised care to vulnerable newborns and making a difference to the more than 48,000 babies born premature or sick each year. 132 babies are born each day requiring specialised care, sadly today only around 1 in 3 families have access to vital support, we need your help.
NICU Awareness Month also plays host to an important day on the calendar for our Miracle families, and that is World Prematurity Day on Tuesday 17th November. A globally celebrated day to raise awareness of preterm birth, along with the deaths and disabilities associated, and the simple, proven, cost-effective measures that could prevent them.
Globally, 1 in 10 babies are born premature, requiring the specialised care of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN) and sadly, prematurity is the number one cause of death for infants in Australia. This year for World Prematurity Day, we’re raising awareness about Kangaroo Care (KC) with the global call to action “A Parent’s embrace: a powerful therapy, enable skin-to-skin contact from the moment of birth.”

Light It Purple
PURPLE is the international colour of prematurity awareness and we are asking Australia to join the rest of the world, to ‘Light It Purple’, highlighting premature birth and the journey of these families.
By participating in ‘Light it Purple’ and illuminating your buildings, work spaces or assets, it will help draw attention to and recognise the challenges associated with babies being born premature and ultimately achieve better, healthier outcomes for these babies and families.
