Poppy and Paisley, 27 Weeks

Miracle mum Emma shares Poppy and Paisley's story:

At 26 weeks gestation I was sent via ambulance to Royal women’s hospital for monitoring of preterm labour, I was away from my 2 toddlers and away from my family and friends, I urged to go home as I believed everything was ok, and with tests and scans I was told I was able to go home . It was August 14th 27 weeks and 3 days a morning I was relaxing waiting for our routine weekly scan for my MCDA pregnancy , I took my mum as a support person as my partner had to work, we got to the appointment and walked in the midwife said ‘oh we didn’t expect to see you still pregnant’ as I had a short cervix but I said back laughing ‘I told you they would still be inside’.
The ultrasound started and I was watching the screen and that’s when I knew something wasn’t right, they kept going back and forth looking at the same little baby who was snug right down there, and that’s when she stopped, normally they measure my cervix but this was different, I got up and she said the words I never wanted to here. ‘You need to go to birth suite we are calling an ambulance you are giving birth today,
I began crying and I couldn’t stop, no explanations, just rushing me to the hospital to wait for the ambulance. In there waiting, knowing I wasn’t going to get the natural labour I had hoped for.
Lights and sirens, I was rushed to Melbourne. With 2 other little girls at home I knew I was going in to this labour with just my mum by my side.
I got to Melbourne, and they started the medications I needed to make sure my twins had the best possible chance of survival.
Sent to the ultrasound room that’s when I found out I was in stage 3 twin to twin syndrome and these babies needed to get out as soon as possible, Baby A’s Doppler's were not looking great.
Back in the labour room I felt like something wasn’t right I had burning pains and then I felt droplets and that’s when they had found out I was also 3cms dilated and my waters had broken.
Rushed into the room I was prepped for an emergency c section. Twin A Paisley was born at 8.19pm and Poppy 8.20pm with my mum by my side.
Paisley was the donor twin and needed 2 blood transitions.
Poppy had sepsis after birth and then developed an infection later on.
After the back and forth travelling, we were able to be transferred to Geelong hospital.
Poppy was discharged from special care leaving at 37 weeks gestation and paisley leaving at 40 weeks gestation.
We are failure to thrive due to allergies and have ongoing appointments with the neonatal clinic and being weighed and monitored every 2-3 weeks.

Returning to work at this current time doesn’t look promising and the long road to normality is in the near future, but without the fast thinking specialists my twins might not be here today.
They are miracles and they were born to thrive.
