Miracle Mum, Michelle says day 50 of their 100 day NICU journey was a highlight because baby Arie finally went into an open cot and wore clothes for the first time! She shares her story...

"During an ultrasound at 24 weeks it was discovered that my cervix was 2cm dilated and membranes were bulging. The news was very traumatic and scary for us after experiencing the stillbirth of our firstborn baby boy. We could only expect the worst outcome.

I was rushed by ambulance to another hospital where I stayed for one week before labour progressed and our beautiful boy was born at 25 weeks and 5 days weighing 999 grams. Arie was strong, however, he needed ventilation to help him breath.

At one day old Arie had suspected meningitis and needed a lumbar puncture. It was heartbreaking to know that his tiny body needed to endure such a horrible procedure but luckily he didn't have meningitis. On day two we were told that Arie had a grade 2 IVH brain bleed. This news broke us. It was one blow after another. Then at day 4 Arie went onto CPAP and we were able to have our first cuddle which was the best feeling!

Over the next few weeks there were many ups and downs. Arie lost 20% of his body weight, had suspected NEC and one morning his body temperature dropped dangerously low scaring everyone. Eventually, he started gaining weight and tolerating his feeds a bit better after his first and only blood transfusion. Slowly we watched him grow and become stronger. Each day blended into one, driving an hour each way to the hospital to cuddle him and attend doctors rounds.

The best day was day 50 when Arie went into an open cot and wore clothes for the first time! Arie finally got to come home after 100 days on his due date weighing 3.150kg and a resolved IVH! It was the most amazing feeling!

We are extremely blessed and lucky to have a healthy and happy boy now at home with us for the past 5 months. He is the most relaxed, happy baby that adores his big sisters and loves to sleep! We couldn't ask for anything more and we are so grateful that we were able to bring him home as a result of the outstanding care he received in NICU. Words can't express how thankful we are to have him home!"
