As teenagers grow, they learn how to regulate their feelings and emotions and how to interact with other people.
High school age children will begin to have a better understanding of what emotions are and will be able to discuss how they are feeling. Developing friendships is a vital part of emotional growth and during this time meaningful relationships with their peers become increasingly important. Feelings of sympathy and empathy towards others will also begin to develop.
As a parent you can help build their skills by being a role model, talking about feelings and providing security by being consistent and predictable.
Mental health in teenage years is vitally important. So many changes occur in the teenage years and it is important to stay in tuoch and have good communication with your teenager. Creating a safe and healthy home environment together with regular discussions around mental health and their emotions and experiences can help support them through these challenging years.
