Respiratory infections in high school aged children can be less common in high school than primary school, however in some cases they can be serious. Common symptoms in uncomplicated respiratory illnesses include runny nose, sore throat, cough, high temperature, wheezing and aches and pains.
Many respiratory symptoms overlap and make differentiating the illnesses difficult especially for parents and teachers.
It is important to learn the signs of respiratory distress if your teenager develops a more severe infection. Signs include gasping for breath, blue lips, rapid breathing, grunts when breathing or flaring of the nostrils. In these cases, where symptoms are severe, they don’t go away or your teenager keeps getting infections it is important to see a doctor or go to hospital.
In addition, paying attention to factors optimising their lung health such as good nutrition, minimising exposure to air pollution, avoiding cigarette smoke, good hygiene and being fully vaccinated should be given importance.
