Some premature birth complications are short term and resolve within time. Others are long term or permanent. Typically, complications of prematurity vary, but the earlier a baby is born the higher the risk of complications.
Adults can have long term intellectual and developmental disabilities and problems with their lungs, eyes and other organs. Some long-term conditions include Cerebral Palsy, Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Retinopathy of Prematurity and gut, stomach and heart issues.
Finding and treating health problems as early as possible can help you lead a longer healthier life.
Being aware of any long term risks to your health due to being born premature or ill at birth is important to help and encourage you to make healthy lifestyle choices. Avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol can assist in long term health.
